The Phoenix Tavern re opened on Thursday 19th November. The new owner has completely re fitted the bar and cellar. He also added two open fireplaces but unfortunately has painted over the lovely black beams Yuk ! (More) |

This was a medieval, timber framed cellar from a building from the Anglo Saxon period.
The brick wall was part of another cellar from a Georgian or Victorian building built over the top of the other.
To the right (out of frame) were a couple of wells and rubbish pits.

Update The dig by SWAT Archaeology has finished. The Archaeologist on site said this was a couple of wells and rubbish pits. Some of the pots came from a kiln at Tyler Hill, Canterbury. Phase 2 will start in a few weeks.
